Bus & Taxi Services in Dubai

The Public Bus Transport system in the Emirate of Dubai is run by the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA). 734 peak bus schedules are run on 79 bus routes cutting over 264,260 km on a specimen working day. Service volumes are adjusted on Fridays and public holidays in relation to the passenger demand. Around 310,000 passengers travel per day. The bus routes span the whole length and breadth of 4,110 sq km area of the Emirate of Dubai.

The bus fleet is made of top quality custom-built buses equipped with individual seats, air-conditioning, electronically operated destination display system and computerised fare equipment. Most of the buses have a carrying capacity of 51 seating and 10 standing passengers. Some smaller capacity buses are run to service inner CBD routes as also a few low-density corridors.

The main bus station is near the Gold Souk in Deira and in Bur Dubai on Al Ghubaiba Road near the Plaza Cinema. Buses run at regular intervals, starting between 5am and 6am and going until midnight or so. Fares are cheap (between AED1 and AED3 per journey), and are paid to the driver when you board, so try to have the exact change ready. Monthly discount tickets and e-Go cards are also available. Buses also go further to Khawaneej, Al Awir, Hatta, and even Oman, for very reasonable prices.

Taxis in Dubai are abundant and can be hailed from the street, or booked to arrive at your doorstep. For the most part, taxis are clean, air conditioned, reasonably priced, and efficient. However, you may run into a driver or two who will refuse their service during rush hours. To be on the safe side, book a taxi ahead of time as trying to hail a taxi on the street has become a hassle.
