Dubai Museum & Galleries

Dubai Museum

Dubai Museum is a highly creative, appealing and well thought-out museum. It is located in Al Faheidi Fort, one of Dubai’s oldest buildings, dating back to 1787. The fort was originally built as the residence of the ruler of Dubai and for sea defence, then renovated in 1970 to house the museum. The site has also been expanded to include a large area under the courtyard of the old fort. All parts of life from Dubai’s past are represented in an attractive and interesting way: walk through a souk from the 1950s, stroll through an oasis complete with falaj, see the way of life in a traditional Emirati house, get up close to the wildlife of the UAE, learn about the archaeological finds from the area or go ‘underwater’ to discover the part the sea has played in Dubai’s growth with its pearl diving and fishing industries.

Godolphin Gallery

Adjacent to Nad Al Sheba Club in the Al Quoz Stables, the Godolphin Gallery celebrates the Maktoum family’s private racing stable, and houses the world’s finest collection of racing trophies. The gallery is refurbished every year and incorporates interactive touch-screen consoles, photographs, video presentations and memorabilia from over 10 years of the Godolphin racing stable. The gallery is open throughout the racing season from its start in November until the end of April.

Artsawa, which was opened in October 2008, is one of a group of art galleries newly opened in Dubai. It hosts up to 15 exhibitions annually, making it one of the most active art platforms in the region. Focusing on the promotion of contemporary Arab art in a variety of mediums including collage, etching, installation, painting, photography, sculpture and video, Artsawa will also hold educational events aimed at engaging the local and international communities. The large warehouse location in Al Quoz past Time Square provides a great space for visitors to interact with the exhibitions.

Another new addition to the art scene in Al Quoz, Basement is located behind Time Square shopping mall. This contemporary gallery showcases the work of emerging and established artists, primarily Iranian, and the exhibitions boast the use of a diverse range of media, in new and traditional formats.

Creative Art Centre

Creative Art Centre is a large gallery and shop with eight showrooms set in two villas. It has a wide range of original art, framed maps and Arabian antiques and gifts. The selection of antiques includes Omani chests and old doors, much of it ‘rescued’ in Oman by the gallery owners and then restored in-house. There’s also a good selection of old weapons and silver. The gallery offers a picture-framing service, and they specialise in the restoration of antiques and furniture. The centre can be found set back from Jumeirah Beach Road.
